Piers Saunders

“Piers Saunders is the Head of Initial Teacher Education and lecturer in Mathematics education at the UCL Institute of Education, London. He is an experienced secondary school mathematics teacher, working in multiple schools in London. Piers has led the Secondary Teach First ITE programme at UCL across eleven subjects, as well as leading the national mathematics Teach First provision and curriculum development working with seven local university providers. He has also had a career in the software industry spending significant time working in Canada as a software development manager for a large IT company. Piers’ most recent research is the EEF funded National Scratch Maths project whose aim was to enable primary pupils to engage with and explore important mathematical ideas through learning to computer program, using the free online programming environment Scratch. The project’s output was a freely available Year 5 and Year 6 curriculum, teacher guides and all related materials. Piers is currently working on the Pre-Service Teacher Education Expansion project in Jordan in partnership with Queen Rania Teacher Academy.”
